  1. i found a interesting study about oral piercings and some of the long term effects it can have. the artical said that 15 to 20 percent of teens who have them are at risk to tooth fracture and also gum disease. it was very significant to me because i have a oral piercing and it kinda made me go into deep thought about removing it. but if anyone else would like more info about you can go to the website that greenfield posted and type in piercings.

  2. According to science daily in February 2008 an article stated stress may increase a woman’s risk of developing cervical cancer. I was aware that Human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cervical cancer. This study states that HPV alone is not sufficient to cause cervical cancer. The researchers hypothesized that stress could lead to changes in the immune system functioning and make body less likely to effectively fight of viruses.
A woman's daily stress can reduce her ability to fight off a common sexually transmitted disease and increase her risk of developing the cancer. In the study, researchers examined potential associations between stress and immune response to HPV among women who had precancerous cervical lesions. The women were asked to complete a questionnaire about their perceived stress in the past month and about major stressful life events. The finding should no response to major life events and immune response to HPV. The finding should women with high levels of stress were more likely to have a impaired immune system and had greater risk of developing cervical cancer because their immune system can not fight off virus that causes it.
This information is important because it could lead to other studies to see if there is a correlation between other cancers and stress. Also, this information could educate women about how there are at risk for other illnesses resulting from stress.

  3. I found a very interesting article titled, "Spanking Kids Increases Risk of Sexual Problems as Adults." The author, Murray Straus, reviewed the results of 4 studies and found that spanking and other physical punishments by parents are related to an increase in 3 sexual problems, which are, verbally and physically forcing or threating a dating partner to have sex, risky sex such as premarital sex without a condom, and masochistic sex, such as being aroused by being spanked when having sex. While reading more into the article, it was stated that these results, and other results of more than 100 other studies, proved that spanking is one of the roots of relationship violence and mental health complications. This is important because over 90% of America's parents are spanking their toddlers. This is useful to me because I have a god daughter that I have (well my mother has) full custody of and we spank her when she has done wrong. But from reading this article, I'm not sure if i want to continue discplining her this way or stop using physically punishment. If I continue, then there's a high risk that when she because sexually active (which I don't want :) )she would go about sex the wrong way. Then if I stop her behavior my get worse... but her sex life in the future will be better..... Oh goodness!

  4. To me its kind afunny that peoplr expect women to care about what they are doing to their bodies before pregnancy. not hust women tho moust people arent really into that type of stuff until they have to be like when they find out they are having a bab. at that point the main foucs is no longer them so they have to focus on the baby. i think that it is sad when people dont care and they still smoke or drink.

  5. “Rui Hai Liu, Cornell associate professor of food science and a member of Cornell's Institute for Comparative and Environmental Toxicology, reports that fresh apple extracts significantly inhibited the size of mammary tumors in rats -- and the more extracts they were given, the greater the inhibition.” This article basically said the more apple abstract and other fruit and vegetables the rats were given the less and smaller tumors they had. It also talked about how apples provide 33 percent of the phenolics that Americans consume annually. Those phenolics have "potent antioxidant and anti-proliferate activities" on tumors. Of course if apples have the same or similar affect on women as the rats this is great for me and other women to know. If it doesn’t it couldn’t hurt to eat an apple or two a day anyway.

  6. One day maybe I want to become a Computer Programmer. I found a very interesting article about a Computer Program that help Drug Abusers stay abstinent. Yale Researchers found out that Drug abusers who used a computer-assisted training program in addition to receiving counseling stayed abstinent significantly longer than those who recieved counseling alone. Drug abusers were randomly assigned to receive traditional counseling or to get computer training based on principles of cognitive behavioral therapy as well as sessions with a therapist. There were fewer positive drug tests at the conclusion of this study. However such therapy is not widely available for people with substance use problems. It was found that many counselors lack time or training to implement CB. The computer-assisted therapy program was designed to help the user learn new ways of avoiding the use of drugs. This is very important to me because creating that program was the cause of this outcome of drug users. Writing and creating valid programs is a major issue in so many organizations. After reading this article, I have decided to really challenge myself to write a program of my own.

  7. In sceience daily the article stated that those who smoke even if they are in higher class will most likely die from preamture death than before a person who does not smoke in a lower class. Also the non-smoking women in the lowest social classes had one of the lowest death rates. The best way to not put your life in danger is not to smoke, but uf you decide to smoke it is better to be in a lower class than higher.

  9. The article stated that one of every 33 babies are born with a birth defect. A birth defect can affect almost any part of the body.Wether the child will be okay depends on which organ or body part is involved and how much it is affected. Many birth deffects affect the heart and other common defects are neural tube defects. The mouth and the roof of the mouth are also common birth defects. Although birth defects are not rare, they are most likely not life threating. I chose this article because the unexpected always happens and becuae life throws loops and turns in all the time.

  10. In the article reported on the science daily website “Freedom Is Just another Word For Less Sexually Activity” it say that even though it is hard to prove they believe that when parents give their children more freedom the child is less likely to follow “negative peer influences”. They say that the free environment helps the child to feel comfortable and more likely to talk openly about sex. It also say that the teen is more like to make informed decisions. When a family have activities that involve the whole family it also cuts back on the child sexual activity. In the article it sates the 2/3 of teens will have sex before age 19. I thought that this was a good article because more teens are having sex then not, and I think that parents need to realize that they may be why some of these children are having sex and getting pregnant at very young ages and not the music and media outlets that they are blaming.

  11. I was doing this assignment while watching tv, and eating dinner after a long day of school and work, but this article got my undivided attention. At the University of Iowa they did a study to give answers to the perennial question of what men and women want in a partner. Men are more interested in an educated woman who is a good financial prospect. Women are more interested in a man who wants a family and less picky about whether he's always Mr. Nice Guy. This conclusion came from a study by University of Iowa sociologists. They analyzed results of a 2008 survey of more than 1,100 undergraduates at the UI, the University of Washington, the University of Virginia and Penn State University, comparing the results to past mate-preference studies. I found this very interesting b/c with those results it seems as if guys are interested in the present but looking to the future as well. Hm, maybe those results only stand true for the guys at those universities with a lower African American population. I say that b/c some of the African American guys I know choose the hood rat chicks b/c they have big butts and pretty faces but haven’t graduated from high school, working at the local store, and have multiple children before turning 20; have nothing going for themselves but welfare and selling food stamps!!! Guys upgrade your standards!!!!! {lol}

  12. One good article that I read was about getting help for Depression and Aniety and the long-term benefits. It stated that according to teh Mood Disorder Society of Canada, about 1.3 million Canadians suffer from depression. They did a study of a group of 200 people who were diagnosed with either depression or anxiety and only 45 were currently on medication. Whats interesting is that they noticed that those who were not using antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications were three times more likely to be suffering from depression or anxiety 10 years later.
The end result was that the people who get treated are less likely to have a relapse in the future. Which makes since!

  13. Science Daily-The article i found was concerning older adults and aging ears and brains. It says that older adults often have trouble understanding what someone is saying, when surrounded by background noise is present. Their ears are not the problem it is the brain. Researchers did MRI(magnetic brain scan) on 36 older people and young adults, testing their ability to identify certain words, some being filtered to make them difficult to understand. They found that older people did worst at understanding certain words because of a part of the brain that processes what our ears hear. This was very interesting to me because, in classes with several people talking, texting,Ipods going (low), i can't hear the teacher,or hear everything the teacher is saying and i often sit in the front of all my classes. What is interesting and baffling to me is i hear everything else around me, but everything the teacher is saying. So for you young people give an old girl a little love, and cool down on the chit chat, click click of texting, and turn the Ipods off until class is over.

  14. I found an interesting article on young adults who marry, live together, or parent early. I've always been interested in this topic because I often hear about the downsides and the tragic stories of young people who get together early. This article actually said that young adults who marry, live together, or parent early are actually at an advantage. There are many benefits to doing so, unless they break up...which causes a higher likelihood of depression in women.Early family options seem to be productive for many young adults, which is contrary to the belief that those things should be put off until the education is finished. Sometimes creating your own family, can be a positive experience. This article gave me hope for my own personal situation, and I can relate. Leaving my home life and joining in with someone else's belief system has been a very positive experience. Every family is different, and it's beautiful when two people from different backgrounds come together for the common purpose of raising a child. It takes understanding, but it's very enlightning.

  15. I have been at Shaw University for going on three years and I have found that most of the confrontations that I've had were with other females who I thought were my friends. Although I already had the belief that women tend not to get along I wanted to do a little research on it. Science Daily shows that "Women have traditionally been viewed as being more social and cooperative than men," but recent evidence show otherwise. New studies show that it is actually men who maintain the larger social networks with males, compared to woman with other women, and they tend to have longer lasting friendships with members of the same sex. In a study done by surveying male and female college students at Harvard University by psychologist Joyce F. Benenson and her colleagues, the study showed that males who completed the surveys, to be more tolerant than females of unrelated same-sex individuals. The males also rated their roommates as being more satisfactory and less bothersome than females did. This study shows us that males can get along with members of the same sex better than women and I agree. I get along with members of the male sex better too. LOL

  16. 1st coming off to college, and every year you stay on campus for the fact of the matter, you have the issue of who ya roommate is gonna be! there was a study done by psychologist Jennifer Crocker an Amy Canevello at the University of Michigan for Social Research. it said that students should be supportive to one another and should shy away from the 'ego-system' approach in which a person only cares about oneself and be more of an 'eco-system' approach in which you are more caring and compassionate to others!! Reach out and touch, somebody's hand, make the world a better place, if ya can!

  17. i chose the article about the grad engineering student that is attempting to narrow the gap of high resolution and virtual reality environments(VE's). i thought this was interesting because i have always been interested in the idea of being in the movies i watch or in the games i play, in order to make fantasy more like a reality.

the article explains that VEs are by far more intense that regular 2 dimensional tvs, but that digital have one advantage. the advantage digital have are that digital tvs can play high resolution video in real time, in which ve's at this point cannot. VEs have trouble rendering the data-heavy video clips at a constant frame rate, hence causing a time gap.

grad student Han Suk Kim of the University of California is trying narrow that gap so enventually VEs can be used for video conferencing and virtual movie theaters. Kim has created a program that shrinks high res video content to fit VEs with a minimized time gap. he will show case his research at the School of Engineering's Research Expo on today, Thursday, Feb. 19.

that's awesome! eventually i can attend class from my bed. lol

  18. Hi if you can’t see my name this is Shawntia Barringer. I've read a research upon professional smokers vs. ex- smokers, and the research shows that of all men and women social class smokers has a higher risk of premature death than non-smokers of lower social class. It also says that non-smoking women of the lower class has one of the lowest death rates than the others. Another thing that the research also stated was that the death rates of ex-smokers were much closer to those of never-smokers than smokers; it shows that quitting doesn't make a difference no matter what class you are in. This article caught my attention because even though I don't smoke, I know people that do smoke almost everyday, all day, and I just wonder how many days do they have left to live. I also fear that being around smokers makes me a second hand smoker and that it is a possibility that I might catch cancer as well.

  19. I found an aricle titled, "High School Sports: Football Leads Sports Associated With Rare Injuries." This article stood out to me because of the type of injuries that happend to young high school students who engage in this sport all across the nation. The injuries varied from rare injuries include eye injuries, dental injuries, neck and cervical injuries and dehydration and heat illness, which may result in high morbidity, costly surgeries and treatments or life-altering consequences. We every once in awhile hear about a football play who passes away due to lack of hydration and the athlete being pushed to hard. So as a solution I believe maybe high school coaches should of course promote hydration of their athletes but also not push them beyond their limit. If winning a game is that serious that someone has to die of overheating; then I believe some coaches need to re-evaluate their morals, ethics, and purpose.

  20. A new study published in the March 2009 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition by Marek Naruszewicz and colleagues from Poland suggests that acrylamide from foods may increase the risk of heart disease. Acrylamide has been linked previously to nervous system disorders and possibly to cancer. It is recommended that FDA and the food industry continue to decrease acrylamide in foods by improving food processing technologies. FDA reports that acrylamide is particularly high in potato chips and French fries. Consumers can reduce their exposure to acrylamide by limiting their intake of potato chips and French fries, choosing a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low fat meat and dairy products, and quitting smoking, which is a major source of acrylamide." I think this information is good read about, because no never know what they put food now and days.
